November's big London openings: Smithfield, Pimlico Road and a Milanese City debut
A new London Museum at Smithfield, Tom Booton's first solo restaurant and Big Mamma's City debut headline a packed month of openings, according to Hot Dinners.
November is the last big month for new London openings this year, and according to Hot Dinners it is a crowded one. Here is what is landing, and where.
Smithfield gets a new centre of gravity
The headline launch is the new London Museum, which is taking over half of Smithfield Market. It comes with a slate of bars and restaurants run by Green & Fortune, including restaurants and cafes from Robin Gill and bars from Mr Lyan (Ryan Chetiyawardana), one of them non-alcoholic. There is also The Poet, a new pub from the team behind Sune.
Hot Dinners notes that PAM, which opened in October, is part of the same shift, and says the area's food and drink scene is undergoing a "massive sea change".
Nearby, at 57 W Smithfield, the team behind Borough Market's Camille is opening a separate restaurant. It leaves the Frenchness of Camille behind for British and Irish cooking inspired by Victorian dishes, with a focus on offal and lesser-known cuts. There is also a standalone tea and biscuits course, served with antique teapots and cups.
Big names, big rooms
Tom Booton, formerly of Grill at The Dorchester, opens his first solo restaurant on Pimlico Road in Chelsea. Expect modern takes on British classics, such as crispy cod cheeks scampi and, on Sundays, a leg of lamb-stuffed Shepherd's Pie Yorkshire pudding. Pritesh Mody, a Channel 4 Sunday Brunch regular, runs the cocktails, including a freezer-cold Beetroot Martini.
In the City, Big Mamma (the people behind Gloria and Circolo Popolare) opens Edmondo on Lombard Street. Hot Dinners says it is promised as "1930s Milanese glamour", with Ferrari references throughout and a maximalist Italian menu that includes an XL focaccia and huge steaks. The soft launch starts at the very end of October.
In Belgravia, Han & Han is the first restaurant of Jeff Tan, who originally launched Hakkasan Mayfair. It takes over the old Roussillon site and does modern Chinese cooking informed by classic techniques. The menu includes a 36-hour dry-aged Peking duck with homemade black truffle pancakes.
In Mayfair, Misha Zelman, one of the founders of Goodman, is reviving the vaulted crypt at The Vestry on Mill Street as an Eastern European-inspired chophouse. Caviar and dumplings lead into big cuts of meat and fish from the grill.
Returns, anniversaries and second sites
Kudu's team is bringing back its old Nunhead space as Braai Bird, built around wood-fired rotisserie chicken with South African sauces and a South African wine list. Hot Dinners calls it a more simplified menu than before.
Bar Douro opens its third site at 10 Greek Street in Soho, on the tenth anniversary of its first opening. It will be the first restaurant in the country to import and serve Carnes Irmãos Unidos Maronesa beef, which appears as a vaca velha ribeye.
The Three Sheets team marks its own tenth anniversary with a new bar a couple of doors from the original on Kingsland Road in Dalston. It specialises in martinis, oysters and wine, and it is standing only.
Florence Knight's Lunette, at the top of the St Clement hotel in Temple, has been taking bookings from invited guests only. From November it opens fully to the public. Hot Dinners praises its pared-back food and a martini served in two ice-cold parts.
In Covent Garden, Manchester's Schofield's opens its second location in the former Chick N Sours space, focusing on its own takes on classic cocktails, with cheese and charcuterie as snacks.
